  • Politicos in Nepal, although unable to initiate the opening step to scribble the constitution in over six months after the Constituent Assembly poll, have displayed competitive spirit in coining agenda after agenda to keep the public engaged and fill in the political vacuum. The latest in the series could be found in their squabble over the issue of making Nepal a people’s republic as against hitherto agreed democratic republic.

Democrats object to the proposition of a people’s republic because it undermines people- elected body – parliament – and makes the ruling communist party the supreme body in the country. In the process all values of democracy, press and rule by people fall under the jurisdiction of communist party. They believe both the People’s Movement II and the CA have not mandated it in any way. No political party, in their opinion, is authorized to pursue the path.

Maoists, however, challenge the democrats and insist that their key role in the Movement and subsequent emergence as the single largest party defeating two major parties such as NC and CPN UML in CA election are vivid proofs of people’s endorsement of their ultimate mission of establishing a communist people’ republic. They claim the voters’ approval offers them the legitimate authority to go against democratic republic.

Critics consider the claim as unjust and charge that the Maoists, who did not mention the point at all for two years after commencement of peace process, suddenly picked up the issue after forming government. The leftists have made a mockery of democracy in doing so, opine some politicos.

The parliamentary democracy and democratic republic are actually the values that no partner of PPM II and participants of CA can challenge in present political circumstances. Disregarding this will be nothing but an insult for the great historical change that people have brought about in the country.

It is time the ruling party and others interested in crafting one or other political agenda to engage people and politicos pay attention to the main task of concentrating on constitution. The politicos who are not in government should also sacrifice the pleasure of engaging in unnecessary debate over the non-issue. They have to be proactive in focusing on the assignment of CA as the same is also their responsibility.

Would they mind their business and ignore the spinners?
