  • Efforts made by entrepreneurs, Prachanda-Cabinet and policy makers for focusing on economy following formation of elected government in post- CA –poll times could be termed a right approach. The economic summit and speeches delivered on the occasion clearly point out the relevance of the same. The country would not be able to have social economic transformation without appropriate emphasis on the agenda.

Aiming at double digit growth could be taken as highly ambitious in the light of prevailing circumstances and the past legacy of handling economic affairs in the country. While Prime Minister Prachanda’s commitment to departing from past tracks and introducing new approaches and Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai’s quest for revolutionary way of driving economy cannot be doubted, both would feel soon they do not have a proper mechanism to attain what they talk.

The ailing economy that is surviving in the country at present has a very pathetic story of government negligence, financial indiscipline, misunderstanding between labour and management, insecurity for industrialists and business persons, demotivation of bankers, entrepreneurs, and closed industries. The saga of electricity, fuel and other supporters of economic powerhouse such as infrastructure like road and market do not have a promising side.

Politicos – ruling and opposition – have not yet learnt the art of mobilizing people democratically without disturbing economic activities in any way. This has victimized the economy directly and indirectly in a multi-dimensional manner. The latest incidents of famine in some hilly districts and Koshi flood have further damaged the productivity of economy.

The scenario described above is today’s reality which cannot be evaded as Dr. Bhattarai steers the country’s economy as Finance Minister through his tool – new budget expected to be presented to the CA soon. Moreover, he has to be responsive to the high expectations people have nurtured right from the day People’s Movement II was launched.

As a top politico presiding over Nepali economy in the Republic of Nepal he should be able to gain confidence from the entrepreneurs, public authority and others. Proper planning for attaining the dream of double digit growth has to begin today; high speed work along the line should be maintained without break of any sort every day from now on.

If this could not be done, “the economic miracle” that Bhattarai talked while addressing the concluding function of the Summit would remain beyond reach. Or, the target of raising investment to the 400 billion rupee level for boosting average monthly income to12,000 rupees cannot be translated into a reality. Leaders of Nepali Industries (CNI) and Business including CNI Chair Binod Kumar Chaudhary are conscious of this. Newly appointed NPC Vice- Chairman Dr. Pitambar Sharma understands what it means. Economists and other key actors of economy are familiar with it.

The fresh emphasis laid on economic agenda is highly encouraging. All expect a sound follow up of the same. In the process, those who guide economy in changing times have to act with vigour, financial discipline, vision and appropriate methodology of economic development.

Prime Minister Prachanda and Dr. Bhattarai, with trust of front-runners of the economy could make a difference in times to come. All donors have stood by the Maoist-led government and have pledged continuity of foreign aid. Armed with such backing, the revolutionary leaders have a great opportunity to play a really driving force for bringing about a meaningful change in Nepali economy.

    Appropriate performance in economy!
This is what Nepalis are looking forward to, today.
