  • Druk regime of Bhutan has released its Bhutanese democratic fighter Dhan Kumar Rai after 17 years of torturous imprisonment.
Rai was given a life term for his committed voice for democracy and human rights.

Reports say Rai has been suffering from mental problems due to inhuman physical and psychological torture by the Bhutanese government.

It is learnt that Rai, who also known as ‘Bhutanese Nelson Mandela,’ has been hospitalized in Kathmandu.

At the request of Bhutanese government, Indian administration had arrested and handed over Rai to the Bhutanese security forces in November 1991.

Human rights and humanitarian agencies fear that hundreds of political prisoners might still be in Bhutanese jails.
